Today's life drawing session was clothed again since the room was not secure enough to draw the figure nude. We focussed once again on drapery and the folds within the fabric with particular consideration on the origin of folds based on movement and the figure's posture.
We began with quick warm up drawings of 1 minute and later moved into more detailed drawings mostly with our wrong hand and blind. We were instructed to develop ideas based on the internal structure of the garments rather than the outline. I began working more and more slowly and, in turn, my drawings became more and more detailed as I began to really 'look'.
Later we began using more fluid materials such as charcoal to develop tonal detail which we then layered below a more graphic drawing using pen. I actually really liked this method since the materials conflicted and so did the drawings yet both were linked and had different levels of depth and details.

SEMESTER ONE (Session one) |

The first week back of life drawing saw us focus on drapery and folds. This involved the model clothed, often in a gown. We were instructed to focus our attention on what was within an outline, often not drawing an outline at all. Much of the drawing I did was with my wrong, left hand. This technique allows your mind to concentrate more and worry less, producing more fluid and interesting imagery. I found this was the case and often preferred the images I'd drawn with my left hand.
I used a range of materials from biro, to pen to charcoal. Charcoal is probably my least favourite material due to how it feels when pressing it to paper however I surprised myself with what I created. I've not once produced an image I like in charcoal though today I did. I began by using the charcoal extremely lightly to gather a sense of composition and structure before adding in detail. I feel I achieved a senses of movement in the drapery with this technique to highlight and shadow areas.
